Ember Farina is a conundrum. As the Fantasy Faire Team Captain and Friends Fighting Cancer executive team member, Ember embodies all that the Fantasy Faire requires in leading, managing and administering the many other dedicated workers involved in making the fantasy a reality; and of course, in liasing with the many generous creators providing goods at the Faire. But take away that public persona of duty and fundamental dedication to making the Faire work, and you find somebody equally dedicated to not being interviewed or not having her photograph taken.

My interview with Ember Farina took four hours, a record created due to both busy-ness from her side, and some real life interruptions from both. But mostly because, as Ember admitted, her SL inbox was still filling up with IM’s, emergencies to deal with, notecards and general requests, even on the last public day for the Fantasy Faire.

Despite this, the interview with Ember – in trying to ask questions of the avatar in front of the Faire, went haltingly but assuredly in the direction that she wanted. Not for Ember, were many questions over what she did – she deflected those quickly enough with long lists of heart-felt thanks for the work of many others on the Faire. I had laid bets with myself beforehand about what turn of phrase Ember might use – either ‘Jack of All Trades‘, or ‘General Dogsbody‘. She eventually volunteered the later, which just goes to re-iterate what a large event like the Fantasy Faire needs sitting behind it – an Ember Farina, in fact. A General Dogsbody leading the work of so many other skilled and hardworking people.

But we all know that General anything isn’t really what Ember is all about, right? Because the woman is a second life dynamo, and Administrator Extroadanaire. Think of the hundreds of roles that Ember must take on, on a daily basis, an hourly basis. Juggling agendas, creator’s needs, entertainers, music streams, lag and script statistics for nine SIMs; writing notecards; monitoring calls for help via notecards, IMs, group chat, emails; juggling databases; wandering SIMs, distributing group notices, suggesting certain visitors put clothes on, or take scripted items off; and working the Faire to make it become real for so many of us. Oh, and occasionally she also had to feed me lots and lots of folders and notecards of information for this website. Lots. Believe me, lots.

In answer to most of my questions, Ember gave me a list of people who were helping her. On looking at the transcript of our interview chat, I decided to sleep on it overnight, and try to work out how best to portray such a centrifugal force in the Fantasy Faire fairly with little data to go on.

Overnight the Fantasy Faire closed, with a record amount of money raised for Relay for Life. There sits the whole background to what makes Ember Farina the woman I have experienced. The announcement of such a total brought into shape the way I wanted to focus on Ember, because it’s also the way she wanted to be focussed on – during our whole interview, all she gave me really was the acknowledgements for all the other people involved in the Faire, and some reasonings on why she works on the Faire. And that’s what I’m going to give you here – Ember’s Acknowledgements, rattled off the top of her head, and probably missing many people.

But it should be noted that these people are people who Ember Farina thinks of often, and who sit within her own hectic schedules in the captaincy of a huge event. These are the people who made the Faire, under the Freinds Fighting Cancer leadership – the Faire that broke records and broke emotions, and brought real the Fantasy for so many of us.

These, then, are the Friends.

Ember’s Acknowledgements (In Her Own Words)

Like so many others, I have lost people – extremely close family and friends and have sworn never to have others go through the same battle. I want to help fight back and feel empowered that, in some small way I can make a difference in the way I know best, and that’s by working with others to bring a common dream together. And when I feel exhausted, there’s always someone else out there that’s doing so much more and then that energises me again.

The appeal of fantasy was that Second Life is about being anyone, or anything, you want to be. Yes you can be like a human, however the creativity of people here deserves to be celebrated and explored.

I always had the dream of having a Pandora after seeing the movie, and I wanted the SciFi shops on the ground – so when Sharni Azalee and Marcus Inkpen agreed to help out I was blown away by what they created – you have to admit it’s spectacular!

And, through a chance comment by a friend, I heard about a magical sim I “had” to see only a few days before we opened. At that stage I really only had clear ideas of who would landscape 5 sims (2 being me and I don’t landscape) but when I saw Mayah Parx‘s sim I knew we HAD to have her involved. In less than two days she fully landscape Wings, Wands Wonders and Avatopia! WWW is really interactive and I’ve always loved volcanos so Avatopia has a big tick too.

Tremayne did a great job with Dark Realms – his builds on the sims were wonderful and, for another “non-landscaper” he rocks!

We started about 6 weeks ago – Arora Zanzibar and I were the only ones pretty much working on the Faire admin till the beginning of the month. She’s our Creator Liaison and did the work of two people in creating a fantastic database and registration website for us. She also was the first point of contact with all of the Creators. Without her help the Faire wouldn’t have run as smoothly as it did.

Whilst she was working on that I was writing up the info and application forms, following up on sponsors, sim hire, advertisements, promotion material, and getting the build competition out there. After that I was able to start building up my team – pulling in more key people who have all become so critical to how incredibly well this Faire has run this year. I started with asking this incredible lady (yes, of course I mean you) who run the website for me last year and has really, with her great team, made it a brilliant resource, fascinating to read and a great source of information, then I was able to bring Evie (Evangeline Miles) on board to take over PR releases and she added in organising a bloggers preview which ended up being really successful. I bumped into a friend, Diane Fairplay, who took on entertainment for us which was great as she has so much musical experiennce in SL.

Another fantastic helper was Kate Sakai who’s brought great enthusiasm to her role taking over the advertising sales and creating our gorgeous logo to fit my nebulous idea of wings and a ribbon. She’ll be much more involved next year which is fantastic. This year Zander Greene and Lauren Thibaud, the other execs of Friends Fighting Cancer, had a major project for their work until the beginning of this month so couldn’t start working on the Faire till three weeks ago. In that short time they managed to not only finalise the build competition but also plan out the entire Faire layout, complete a number of builds themselves, package up and send out all a sample of each shop to the creators (with a map and exact orientation) and then fully preset the sims for us (including terraforming and building/setting up the Great Gates) in two days!

Once we got the sims the rest of the team came on board – Sharni, Marcus, Tre set the sims for us (including terraforming and building/setting up the Great Gates) in two days! Once we got the sims the rest of the team came on board – Sharni, Marcus, Tremayne and Mayah were amazing with their landscaping, and then our build winners were fantastic too – Romana Falta, Sharni & Tremayne (yes we all multi-task in this group). Earh Primbee as another builder – he did the fantastic stage.

Finally CaptainCrunch Hax and Kirky Kiergarten returned this year to share their amazing expertise with sim management and the lovely Vickie Maidstone to assist with event hosting. And my dear friend Felixx Shepherd for coming and fixing up what I attempted to do in with landscaping in Mer !

I’ve probably forgotten someone, and for that I’m terribly apologetic, but these were the main people on the ground and my job was to coordinate and direct what was going on. I’m fortunate to have a team of people who take my ideas and run with them. I’ve been involved at every level myself from writing up notices and invitations to hosting events, handling money and running the auction. I even through my hand in at landscaping for the first time! Generally the Captain’s job is more a cross between Director / Coordinator and general dogsbody!

Editors Note : I seriously should have laid bets on that phrase being used.

And finally I gave Ember the chance for her last heartfelt words –

[10:08] Ember Farina: I’d like to thank our amazing Creators, they’ve yet again shown us how incredibly inspired they are at making this Faire their own – their shops are stunning and their generosity has often moved me to tears. Many donating all of their proceeds from this week or significant item/s which we could sell or use for prizes. I love the sense of a community we’ve created together – all working towards making a significant impact against cancer. I definitely watch the kiosk totals …. I’ve been known to count down whenever we near a milestone. As it is, I am very confident we will easily reach 2 million lindens by the end of the Faire, and that is double last year’s end of Faire amount. We’ve achieved that through our Creators bringing out new lines and helping promote them at the Faire, the amazing promotion, website and blogs, fantastic entertainers who shared their time and passion and the great auctions.

[10:08] Ember Farina: Oh and your specding ability has helped as well LOL

[10:09] PacificBlue Hanly: The what?

[10:09] Ember Farina: *spending

[10:09] Ember Farina: Sorry lack of sleep

[10:09] PacificBlue Hanly: Ohhhhh, lol

[10:09] Ember Farina: My typonese skills are improving

[10:09] PacificBlue Hanly: Okies, fair enough. I may not be a creator, but I feel good in spending, lol

[10:11] PacificBlue Hanly: So, that’s the end of a four hour interview for somebody who really doesn’t want to be interviewed. I have enough material to write this up, just need a picture. Will you be avoiding me at the Trinity Sisters by hiding behind some fireworks?

Insert a chase around the SIMs as Ember refused to have her photo taken until I threatened her with putting a blank card up here with a question mark on it.

You may have found Ember Farina around the Fantasy Faire SIMs in ancient dragon form (she logged out half way in flight, and on logging back in, crashed down onto the head of some poor Creator out there), an eloquent blonde Fae, or lately Ember’s spent some time swimming around as a Mer.If you were Dagmar, you may even have found one moment to kiss her.

Ember’s hope to hit the 2 million Linden mark for Relay for Life was met only an hour or so after this interview. In fact, the Fantasy Faire has raised over 2.5 Million Lindens, all to fight cancer, and to give back lives. Congratulations to all of us, and especially to Ember Farina and the FFC team.

And so, I’ll leave Ember Farina flicking her tail and zipping away from me, having finally caught my fish and pinned her down squirming long enough for an interview. Even though I’m not a fisherman, I know it’s best to eventually let the good ones out of the net, and back into the waters they feel at home in. Until next time, Ember Farina…

And Thank You!!!

Zander Greene is one of the executive team members who created (both literally and figuratively) the Fantasy Faire for all of us to experience again this year. You may have noticed Zander around the Faire in several roles – from that of flying around the Faire SIMs dishing out prizes as a Low Lag Fairy, to entertainment announcer and host on the main stage at FF Central. What you don’t get to see is the sheer depth of enthusiasm and positivity Zander radiates about the Faire, and the opportunities within it for all of us.

I was fortunate enough to interview Zander late my night last night, while Zander flew that ‘flight’ dance in FF-purple angel wings, dipping up and down above the Main Stage while DJ Aryon Dagger played below.

I chose the above portrait of Zander for a reason. Despite getting a very nice shot of Zander alone in the sky, which was nicely detailed, I chose this crowd shot of the stage event Zander and I were attending during the interview. The other snapshot may have shown Zander Greene with more detail, as the subject of this interview. However, Zander Greene should be shown in an environment he belongs in, not alone, because the Fantasy Faire was created to be shared with friends and visitors alike – they make up as much of the Faire as he alone does, and they belong in the same snapshot.

As an interviewer and writer, I could have easily slanted this post around to talk about hard work, dedication or some of the administration elements which make up the Faire, but Zander’s personality led me to having the ability, on this last day of the Fantasy Faire, to provide a documentation of the reason sitting behind this Faire. It put into words the feelings and motivation that you will find within all the Fantasy Faire team members, and in many of the visitors to this Faire, and that of any other RFL event in Second Life.

What the following does not portray is the humour that Zander possesses. For a shot of that, you need only join the Fantasy Faire group in-world, to get a sense of the general ribaldry which can exist amongst some serious topics and a great Fantasy. Zander is quick witted and fast in his praise. He and Ember Farina, the Team Captain for Fantasy Faire, are part of what makes me want to be a small part of this whole big thing.

So, let’s start with that interview, finally, shall we…

1. As Creative Director of the Fantasy Faire, what’s your favourite bit – and don’t tell me it’s being the lag fairy…

LOL No thats my least favorite part haha My favorite part is getting through the list of to-do’s everyday and getting to wander around and experience this incredible event like a visitor does. The way the creators make every shop so special, so distinct, the beautiful landscaping, the people all here to suppport Relay for Life….its all so inspiring and humbling

2. But tell me why Fantasy? The FFC team have been doing this for 2 years now. Why Fantasy?

I hoped someone would ask that question!

The answer is sort of the same as the answer to the queston ‘Why does the Fantasy Faire Relay?”

We believe that there is a magic inside of everyone of us. Its the part we touch in with when we come to this beautiful world we share called SL, and its that creative, resourceful side of us that we need most when we face a challenge like fighting cancer.

We need hope, to believe.

That the side of us that will beat this thing. Our imaginative spirit will see us through this battle and we want the Fantasy Faire to nurture that side of people who visit.

3. I’m one of the few people I know who has come to SL to ‘NOT CREATE’, simply consume of the beauty and energy of the place. I rarely get the chance to meet people considered to be master creators or builders here. I see that of you and the other builders here at Fantasy Faire, like Lauren…is that powerful for you, to be able to provide something of yourself so viscally and for such a cause?

Oh goodness yes! I can’t cure a head cold BUT I can come here and be the best part of myself, bring my love of the arts to this cause and at the end of the Faire, tired as I am, I feel like I’m 2.5m tall in RL!

And feel that I’m helping to bring us closer to a cure!

4. Doesn’t that open you up to some vulnerbility also? Putting yourself out there like that…

This would be an emotional experience even if it were not for RFL. Its so much work and you get worn down a bit and here come the waterworks haha BUT

When you take a moment to step back, and remember why we do this

It takes your breath away

5. Yes. It does. I believe most of the Faire visitors understand that also. For some reason, the Fantasy touches closely on the reality of our situations…

Too many understand it all too well. I wish I had to explain it to MORE people, why we’re here, why we Relay. But cancer has made enemies of us all and when people see that RFL logo it stirs feelings, memories that you don’t shake no matter how much time goes by. This damn disease has got to go and to share this goal with the world…you know on the one hand you say thank goodness so many people care about this issue but then you remember that they care because they’ve lost, they’ve suffered. If it doesn’t make you weep then you’re in need of a new heart with better scripting.

6. PacificBlue Hanly: So, are you ready to tell me which part of all of this is your favourite…

[14:28] Zander Greene: LOL

[14:28] PacificBlue Hanly: no…let me guess

[14:29] Zander Greene: Help! I’m being trapped!!

[14:29] PacificBlue Hanly: This part? This final part. The people coming…

[14:30] PacificBlue Hanly: Despite your joy at the creation process, it’s the people and the entertainment, and seeing people here relaying? How close am I?

[14:30] PacificBlue Hanly: Or how far?

[14:30] Zander Greene: If you were closer we’d be one. And indeed we all are. Thats the real magic and its no damn fantasy.

Interviewers Note : Despite Zander complementing me on the interview, and my several attempts within it to speak about the length of time in creating the Fantasy Faire (and the actual building) you can probably get the feeling from the above questions and answers that it was Zander who remained firmly in control of both the interview and the message he wanted to get across to Faire goers.

If you meet Zander Greene, you meet someone who manages to not only control his world but do it forcefully with geniune emotion. He has turned loss and a disease into something incredibly powerful and motivating. He uses the term, ‘My Friend’ a lot, and Zander means it.

I was left with an impression that cancer had affected Zander deeply in real life somehow, but he’d turned this around into a positive and emotional force to be reckoned with. As with the other Friends Fighting Cancer team members, Zander lives the Fantasy but with purpose. It is perhaps not coincidence that the several times I’ve seen Zander around, he has chosen to wear angel wings in relay purple. But despite this angelic or perhaps figuratively god-like appearance, let’s not forget that although he’s waivered away talk about the work involved behind the scenes – for a year – on the Fantasy Faire, Zander Greene remains one of the hardest workers I’ve had the pleasure to meet. He is constantly administrating the Faire itself, and as it comes to an end for another year, he has not slept much this week at all.

Zander Greene is the Relay for Life, for me at least. And that makes it incredibly awesome to play even a minor part in the making of the Faire myself. As we all can, simply by coming along.

7. So, ending this (for the sake of a nap) – is there anything, Zander Greene, that you would like to say to the readers of the FF website?

I want to thank everyone. Whether you’ve been working to make this possible, or gave something wonderful to the auction, or played a concert, or wrote a blog, or did oneof 10,000 jobs that HAVE to be done to make this possible.

You all are my reason to Relay.

And especially to every soul who came and visited the Fantasy Faire, bought something from one of the RFL vendors or gave to a RFL kiosk. I want every soul who has been a part of this to know that you have made a difference. You have saved lives, eased suffering and brought us ever closer to granting the world’s wish for a cure.

Thibauld and Greene Industries

Given his role within the Fantasy Faire itself, on the Executive team for Friends Fighting Cancer, and as a master builder of many of the components making up the Faire, I was puzzled why Zander and his business partner, Lauren Thibauld, had also provided money as a main event sponsor for the Faire. Afterall, wasn’t all that time and work enough from him?

So I asked (somewhat niavely) – Okay, so despite all this hard work, and I have no reckoning of most of it, why are you sponsoring events here, Zander, as a business?

Zander was as honest as ever about the incentives in providing sponsorship at the Faire from his own business (partnered with Lauren Thibauld, another master builder, and the creator of most of the Great Gates of the Faire which go up for auction later today).

Oh you’d be crazy not to toss a few thousand lindens in the kiosk to be a sponsor here at the Fantasy Faire.

I run a business here in SL and the thing is, I’m more concerned with WHO I build for than with how much I make building it. When someone comes up to me and says ‘I saw your logo at the Faire and want to talk to you about a development’ I know that this is someone who cared enough to come to the Faire and look at whats really going on! Thats someone I want to work for, work WITH! And it happens a lot.

To be a sponsor for a major Relay for Life event is good for your heart AND for your business.

Zander Greene and Lauren Thibauld work and create as artists some fantastic builds. Their creativity and quality can be witnessed as you walk around the Faire. My favourite own build – aside from those found on the Sector SciFi SIM - is actually the Fantasy Faire Central Stage itself, where the above interview took place. This is a spectacular sky-globe with central platforms and surrounding seating to sit back to enjoy the entertainment and live acts.

You will find many stunning large or small builds right across the Faire, as an indication of the work you will get if contracting Thibauld and Greene Industries through the Fantasy Faire.

The Fantasy Faire winds up this weekend and I’ve tried to keep up with the literally hundreds of blogs about the Faire, and list them as I’ve found them. Sources have been large – from personally scanning hundreds of blogging feeds to picking up on those which go through this website’s dashboard faster than you sink into the sea at a SIM crossing, to those bloggers who emailed or IM’ed either myself or Evangeline Miles.

I guarentee, however, that I missed a good many of the blogs and media attention towards the Faire, so would like to take this opportunity to whole-heartedly add my own thanks to everybody who blogged and got the word out on the Faire this year. There will still be many blog posts yet to come, as avatars catch up with everything they’ve purchased from all the fantastic creators we have at the Faire. Feel free to add your own blog posts over the next week onto the comments area on the FF Talk page.

Now, a couple of mentions from my own side -

Some top blogger and photographer callouts mainly for sheer volume and hard work, because I know these people particularly cared about their posts, and providing them for us and importantly, their precense around the Faire noticably added to ‘The Fantasy’ -

Shayariel Teardrop, who happens to be one of the Fantasy Faire writers here on this blog, and whom I found wandering the Faire – ALL WEEK, attending many of the events, and on call when I quickly was asked for some Great Gate photographs – and she had them done within minutes. At last count, Shay had blogged 15 personal blogs about the Faire, not to mention the articles she provided for this website. And she has put up a lot of images onto the Fantasy Faire Flickr group also. (Find Beulah’s links to her posts on the FF Talk page)

Beulah Mills, who to date, has written 7 blog posts personally, as one of Evie’s official bloggers – and I would like to highlight Beulah’s attention to her posts – she has meticulously included picks from FF creators which will cater for those avatars who aren’t as much into fantasy clothing. (Find Shayariel’s links to her posts on the FF Talk page)

Wildstar Beaumont, who has a stunning portfolio of images – covering all of the SIMs, and many of the people at the Faire, on our FF Flickr group. (despite Wildstar twice outbidding me on certain items at the Fantasy Faire auctions, I bare no ill-will for this particular person, lol)

Villemo Inglewood, who again has populated the Flickr group with an impressive range of beautiful images taken at the Faire.

Dagmar Haiku, for again, a large range of photographs shared on Flickr, and for Dagmar’s precense at many of the events on Central Stage, and the announcements of Tiny Tea Parties which made me grin everytime I read the FF group in-world.

On the Flickr note, I have taken the liberty of putting together a gallery for each of the Fantasy Faire SIMs, using all of the images found on our group. Unfortunately Flickr doesn’t allow me to add my own images to galleries, so there are around 40 of the SIM snapshots which can’t appear within these galleries. At some point I’ll create a pseudo-logon and upload those to add to the Galleries (links below). However, thanks to the people mentioned above, and many others, the galleries make a collection of the Faire to browse through.

Link - Flickr Galleries

There are so many other bloggers who have written many great blog posts, and I also have the other Fantasy Faire writers to thank for their interviewing of our main sponsors and additional articles and photographs taken and shared here on this website. And of course, without all the hard work of the Friends Fighting Cancer Executive, Operations, and Set-Up team members, there would not have been a Fantasy Faire this year to write about. For a list of these, please see the link below.

Link – Fantasy Faire Teams

Thank You ALL
PacificBlue Hanly

And it’s not finished yet – there’s still a full day of Fantasy to go!

I have promised you a closer look to some designers donations items, so here it is !
But first, I want to thank every designers for letting me review their work, thank them for their generosity, thank them for making this event each year even greater and thank you reader, visitor for taking a look in it and why not… contribute to the RFL effort !
Thank you so much !!!!

The free Mer tail and outfit by Pye was an excellent find, which I found pretty well completed by Tekeli-li RFL gifts : Piscene jewels, Nixie hair and the tiny faeryfish pet. Here starts your mermaid’s dreams… under a Foxworth‘s Off Sim Fae Moon.

Caverna Obscura will once more amaze you with her delicate and so detailled designs, like the Dream Thief Dark outfit which happened to match some of 7 Selection‘s wings like the Oleander Wings, so cute with their RFL ribbon and the Kimono Bat wings (non-RFL)

And to stay in touch with your inner fae

I’ll strongly advice to get the Ambrosia gown still by Caverna Obscura (RFL item) or the Serenity and Peace wings, elegantly crafted by Material Squirrel (RFL items) …. those wings are really incredible !

And what does rythm with cuteness?

Well Angelwing designs probably !The Isolde (right) gown got me stunned by its simplicity and yet … so beautiful. And it includes the accessories ! For a more mischievious and gothic look, the must have are certainly Blue Blood RFL items; Felicia and Carly dresses.

But faes… beware of the Drows ^-^

They can hide, even behind Wings Songs‘s wings.. so you better be carefull

Yes !! I’m not done yet with all the amazing designers from the Faire !!!
And once more… thank you for the priviledge of being a writer of this wonderful event !
Don’t forget to check the official Fantasy Faire blog

So yes we were mentionning Drows no ? Well with the avie from Curious Kitties and the Anariel outfit from Caverna Obscura.. you’ll get the perfect look !
But you can also get a perfect human look !

With Angelwing Sunset Dreams dress… you’ll be able to make .. men dream !
And if the outfit isn’t enough…

You may captivate them with a deep magic look in your eyes …. by Ibanez of course.

Another store I did love to visit was Animations Rising and more specially the Rising Silks (RFL item)

Those were just amazingly … magic. I have no better way to describe how delicate and lovely it looks.

But if you want to stop for a moment, why not enjoy the swing by Silver Dragon Creations ?
So you can take time to enjoy your dress by fumi or the armor by Rfyre. You really get to love Rfyre for every outfit offers you a large panel of style possibilities.

And let’s end our tour with Silent Sparrow and Evie’s Closet

The two donation dresses by Silent Sparrow are just absolutely cute, and to achieve your mischievious look, don’t forget to get your munch on faery from Evie !

And I couldn’t resist but to show you the total look by Curious Kitties.
With the drow avatar, the Dark Elf Flora dress and the Enchanted wings (all RFL items) and also SpellBound Dollie Red dress !

Thanks you so much designers !
And thank you everybody taking part in this great event.

The Fantasy Faire is here! On the Avatopia sim there are Moonstruck and Fantavatar, Luna Barak's stores. I decided to visit.

I know, I know. The Fantasy Faire has been going on for a while, but I had a speech to do for class, and I just finished it. So I decided to visit the Avatopia sim. My first stop was my girl Luna Barak’s Moonstruck and Fantavatar. Moonstruck was Luna’s first venture; the store has beautiful fantasy costumes.

Above and below are some examples of the female costumes. Gourgous, right?

Then I went downstairs to check it out. Fantavatar is for full fantasy avatars. Being an elf, I was interested. And there was so much to look at! There are male and female avatars. There are faun, elf, and fairy avatars. Luna also offers hair made to match her avatars!

I’ll definitely be exploring Avatopia and the rest of Fantasy Faire.

Koty
